THINGS TO AVOID AFTER SURGERY

  • Smoking: Absolutely no smoking following surgery for 48 hours. Smoking is the leading cause of complications following oral surgery.
  • Heavy exercise: Avoid strenuous exercise which can elevate the blood pressure resulting in bleeding.
  • Brushing: Do not brush or floss in the area of the surgery until it is comfortable to do so.
  • Vigorous Rinsing: Avoid any rinsing during the first 24 hours following surgery. After 24 hours, gentle rinsing with salt water (1 teaspoon in a cup of warm water) will promote healing. Do this several times a day to help remove food debris from the surgery site.
  • Crunchy Foods: Avoid any foods that are hot or need to be chewed. Common examples are peanuts, potato chips, crusty bread and etc. Cool, soft, or blended foods are most appropriate for the first 48 hours. After 48 hours any food that is comfortable to eat is probably ok.
  • Drinking from a Straw: Avoid drinking from a straw for the first 48 hours as the suction can easily get the bleeding started again.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcoholic drinks.
  • Carbonated beverages: The carbonation and acids in sodas can dissolve the blood clot and promote bleeding.
