GENERAL SURGERY INFORMATION
|
- Following your surgery a gauze pack will be placed over the wound and you will be asked to apply heavy biting pressure to the extraction site. Bleeding will generally be under control before you leave the office but it may be necessary to continue applying pressure with gauze for a few hours. Fold the gauze in quarters, dampen slightly, and place directly over the wound. Apply steady biting pressure until bleeding stops. The gauze pack can be changed if it becomes saturated with blood.
- Oozing of small amounts of blood is normal and can be expected following surgery. If bleeding persists more than a few hours dampen a regular tea bag, wrap it in a gauze pack and bite down on it for 30 to 40 minutes. The natural substances in tea are very good for coagulation.
- Swelling: Application of ice pack on the cheek or jaw adjacent to the surgery site can be helpful in reducing swelling and bleeding. Place the ice pack for 20 minutes then remove for 20 minutes. Continue for 12-14 hours.
- Discomfort or Pain following dental procedures is common as the mouth is a very sensitive area. It usually goes away quickly and often responds well to normal "over the counter" pain relievers. Tylenol and Ibuprofen are effective for most people, but avoid aspirin as it can promote bleeding. For more extensive procedures a stronger pain reliever may be prescribed.
- For some grafting procedures a firm "perio pack" will have been placed over the grafted site for a few days following surgery. It is important not to disturb the site to insure the grafted tissue will heal properly. Eat only soft foods chewing on the opposite side. Use extreme care when cleaning your teeth so as not to dislodge the pack. If the pack begins to separate from the site call the office for instructions.
